POWER RANKINGS - BFFL

As the new league sheets and team offices for the 2021 season are being prepared, we have our first Power Rankings and Waiver Priority List for the 2021 season.

The League Commissioner was not a fan of the previous waiver priority list, a system which saw teams ranked in order of their win-loss record in a particular division which he felt did not quite reflect how strong or weaker some divisions were, considering that nearly half the season games are against divisional opponents. He also felt that a team should be ranked on its strength of schedule also.

Using a system he had devised for college football rankings, the Commish has implemented a formula process where each week teams will be ranked using a system which takes into consideration their result, strength of opponent and the strength of the division they compete in.

This system will not only allow the Waiver Priority List to be generated, it will also act as a Power Ranking for teams in each league.

The first set of rankings for the new season was produced today.

The above list gives both sets of rankings, the Power Ranking being the most obvious, ranking the best team on performance in 2020. The Waiver Priority List in the BFFL is used to separate teams who have requested the same player in free agency and this process decides which team gets their man, the team with the highest ranking.

In the rankings above, the BFFL Bowl winners top the performance rankings having only lost two games all season. Swindon Steam are ranked second, although they did not make the Bowl game, having just lost out in the Elimination Playoff.

Three BFFL South teams are in the top ten, which demonstrates what was being said throughout 2020 as to how tough that particular division was to compete in.

One of the interesting factors of the new system is that it does take into consideration strength of schedule and this is also demonstrated with Cambridge Dragons who finished fourth in the BFFL East, but sit ninth in the Power Rankings due to the tougher schedule they had to endure as opposed to the team who finished above them in that division, Medway Tigers.

Compared to the other ranking, the Waiver Priority List, Somerset Sea Kings hold the top spot going into the season, followed by London Hawks and Manchester Hornets.

Both the Power Rankings and Waiver Priority will change weekly, based on the performance of a team at that time.

Over the coming weeks the Power Rankings and Waiver Priority List for the other head-to-head leagues will be released. The British Bulldog teams will not have a Power Rankings lists as they are Bestball and therefore their Waiver Priority will be based purely on the order in which they sit within their league of total points.

The Commish and Assistant Commish wish to thank all of the teams for their patience during this time as they work hard behind the scenes to put the new processes in place, processes which will not only make the league run smoothly, but will enhance the experiences from last season.
