  The Isle of Wight is an island in the English Channel, situated off the coast of Hampshire, separated by the Solent. It is designated a UNESCO Biosphere reserve. Ancient records note the Romans referred to the island as Vectis and the Greeks to it as Iktis. There are remnants and artefacts which date back to Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. The Isle of Wight suffered heavily from Vikings raids. During World War II, when the island was heavily bombed, there were observation stations and transmitters due to its close proximity to France. It was the starting point of Operation Pluto, the pipelines to feed fuel to Europe after the Normandy landings. In sporting terms, the Isle of Wight is well known for its cycling and waters sports. Cowes Week is a famous regatta hosting several races and is the longest running regatta in the world. There are several non-league football clubs, the Isle of Wight Marathon and Golf.
