QUICK 10 WITH.....IOW BUCCANEERS

The Isle of Wight is an island in the English Channel, situated off the coast of Hampshire, separated by the Solent. It is designated a UNESCO Biosphere reserve.

Ancient records note the Romans referred to the island as Vectis and the Greeks to it as Iktis. There are remnants and artefacts which date back to Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. The Isle of Wight suffered heavily from Vikings raids.

During World War II, when the island was heavily bombed, there were observation stations and transmitters due to its close proximity to France. It was the starting point of Operation Pluto, the pipelines to feed fuel to Europe after the Normandy landings.

In sporting terms, the Isle of Wight is well known for its cycling and waters sports. Cowes Week is a famous regatta hosting several races and is the longest running regatta in the world. There are several non-league football clubs, the Isle of Wight Marathon and Golf. The island competes in the bi-annual Island Games.

The IOW Buccaneers compete in the BFA South Division and just missed out on a playoff spot in 2020. They are known for that "Lamar-Tua" trade with the South Devon Dolphins. They have the 7th overall pick in the 2021 BFA Draft.

We sat down with the man who "campaigned" for an Isle of Wight team to be included in the BFFL.

We know him as Jolly Rog or Captain Rog, aka Big Poppa Pump.

This is Roger, the GM of the IOW Buccaneers, and these are his Quick 10 Questions.

1. How did you get involved in the league?

Twitter talk about the BFFL and I cheekily asked Simmo to get the Isle of Wight involved....and so the rest is history.

2. What team do you support and why?

Florida State Seminoles - Disney trips in the 90's with the family and I noticed them on sports TV, etc, thin it was actually March Madness time.

No NFL - awaiting the London Jags to come.

3. How did you get into NFL?

Channel 4, 1980's and 90's. Staying up late for Super Bowls with toffee popcorn and 2 litres of cola on a black and white TV with a coat hanger for an aerial.

4. Who is your favourite player and why?

Jameis Winston - National Champs 2013, FSU

Johnny Manziel - The College Years

5. What is your experience in fantasy football?

Dream team since the days of newspapers and phoning in your team. NFL since 2013, a few dynasty/Devy teams on MFL and co-Commish/treasurer of one those Home Leagues on NFL site.

6. What are your views on a potential London franchise?

Let's roll!! - Lots to sort out, but I imagine a likely situation is, base the team (players) on the east coast (Jacksonville), fly over for back-to-back home games and set up the community side of things with full time employees here.

7. What other hobbies/sports do you enjoy apart from NFL?

Played Wessex League football for years, which took up most of my life. Stopped playing 8 years ago.

So....general exercise/fitness is is.

8. What's your favourite film?

American Pie collection.

9. What's your favourite music?

Everything.

10. Who is your Super Bowl tip for this year?

Wise-man says Tampa. Betting man says Packers.

We would like to thank Captain Rog from taking the time out of his busy fitness schedule and firefighting duties....

....to take part in the Quick 10 feature.

Interesting Fact - The Commish's aunt lived on the Isle of Wight for many, many years near Sandown and he has fond memories of this.
