QUICK 10 WITH.....WEST LONDON STING
West London. Extending from the City of Westminster to the edge of the River Colne. Part of the "London Plan", West London can incorporate the West End, Knightsbridge, Ealing, Hounslow, Harrow, Uxbridge and Shepherd's Bush.
The West London area can include Earls Court, for exhibitions, events and fairs, with the biggest employer in the area being London Heathrow Airport.
The "W" postcode was introduced in 1857, but many areas with a "SW" postcode are north of the River Thames and can be pulled into the West London sphere, such as Chelsea and South Kensington.
In sporting terms, West London is a bed of football. Brentford, Chelsea, Fulham and QPR are the teams most associated with this area.
The West London Sting were an expansion team in 2020 and spent that season learning, rebuilding and shaping their future. They are part of the "The Banjo Brothers" and "BFU South" collective.
The GM is also a bit of a "quiz merchant" and competes in the Saturday Zoom Quiz League which The Commish runs fortnightly.
The GM is Tom and these are his Quick 10 Questions.
1. How did you get involved in the league?
As with a few of the other teams, I'd seen some interactions on Twitter, started following and then when there was a space for a couple of teams, I managed to nab one. Without doubt a great decision!
Despite it being early days, the league has already shown how awesome it is and feels like it's only going to continue to get better from here.
2. What team do you support and why?
LA Chargers - My uncle used to live in LA and they were the team that he followed back when they were in San Diego, so I picked them. He also recommended a shop in Birmingham that sold jerseys. The first one I saw in there was an Antonio Gates one. That sealed the deal.
3. How did you get into NFL?
A couple of mates from school followed it and I got into it a little just from being around them. It was probably when the London games started though that I took more of a serious interest and get to at least one of of those games each year.
4. Who is your favourite player and why?
Favourite player would probably be Philip Rivers, being the one player I probably saw the most through following the Chargers.
5. What is your experience with fantasy football?
I played a lot of fantasy football in other sports, mainly Premier League and Rugby. I started playing just redraft about 5 or 6 years ago and last year was my first dive into Dynasty leagues and I'm loving them so far. I love the fact you can be in multiple leagues, all with different rules and that changes the values of players so you don't end up with the same players drafted in the same positions all the time.
6. What are your views on a potential London franchise?
Having just read American Football's Forgotten Kings on the London Monarchs, I think fan wise it would be so much bigger and well supported now. I still think logistically though there's too much of a gap in bringing a team here full time. I'm happy enough with a few regular season international games over here.
7. What other hobbies/sports do you enjoy apart from NFL?
I follow a lot other sports, most of the American ones. When live sport was a thing you could attend, we had Wasps season tickets and would go to quite a few of the Coventry City and QPR games. Away from watching sport I play a lot of Football Manager and when I'm out and about, Pokemon Go!
8. What's your favourite film?
I've never been big into films, whenever I look through peoples top 10's in most instances I've seen next to none of them! Whenever it's on, I'll always watch Gone In 60 Seconds and despite never having any interest in musicals, The Greatest Showman would sit somewhere near the top of my list.
9. What's your favourite music?
I'll listen to pretty much anything, dependant on how I'm feeling. The go-to though would be The Weeknd, there's nothing he's released or recorded I've not been in to. Any era of hip-hop though will do for me, anytime.
10. Who is your Super Bowl tip this year?
As hard as it is, I think the Bucs could go back-to-back and win it again. If the Chiefs can restock their offensive line, they should be back there too.
The Commish wishes to thank "photo-shy" Tom for his Quick 10 questions and wishes to remind him the quiz is next weekend so can he throw a sicky at work to take part. Thank you-muchly.
