QUICK 10 WITH.....HERNE BAY SAXONS

Herne Bay, a seaside town on the East Kent coast, sitting at the mouth of the Thames Estuary. Home to the world's first free-standing clocktower and the birthplace of BBC scriptwriter Anthony Coburn who conceived the idea of the police box in Doctor Who.

In sporting terms Herne Bay is known for its water-sports and hosted the Zapcat Power Boat Racing Championship, but other than that not much to shout about.

That was until the Herne Bay Saxons clinched the BFU East Divisional title and the BFU Bowl in 2020, under the leadership of The Commish who took over as GM in Week 4 of last season.

The Saxons are hoping to continue their run of success and grab promotion at the first attempt to the BFA.

This is The Commish and these are his Quick 10 Questions.

1. How did you get involved in the league?

The idea came to me to start an "old skool" fantasy football league in 2019, after I had co-commished on a few leagues. I wanted to do more writing, video and community focused things which those leagues just didn't want to do. Fast forward to 2020, the BFFL was born and this amazing community has just kicked on ever since.

2. What team do you support and why?

I have supported the Washington Football Team since 1983. A few friends on my estate in Croydon got me into it, they supported the Cowboys, Giants, Dolphins and 49ers. Cowboys were on Channel 4 one Sunday playing Washington and I decided to support Washington to wind my friend up.

3. How did you get into NFL?

A friend of mine I used to hang around with was into NFL, his dad was American and a Bengals fan (I nearly ended up supporting them) and he taught me the rules and gave me a heads-up. I haven't looked back since. There used to be about 12 of us who used to play "tag-football" on the field near my house. Great memories.

4. Who is your favourite player and why?

I've always spoken about my admiration for Joe Montana, he was my favourite player during that period. On defense I also idolise Lawrence Taylor and Dexter "The Secretary Of Defense" Manley.

5. What is your experience with fantasy football?

To be honest, I have always been more on the side of writing and behind the scenes rather than participating. It is only over the last couple of years I have "joined in". I wasn't even going to have a team in the BFFL, but a spot came up and a few GM's "bullied" me into taking a team. I actually get the enjoyment out of the behind the scenes stuff more than being a GM, that said I am enjoying the GM role in these leagues, great bunch of people.

6. What are your views on a potential London franchise?

I can see the point of building on the fan base we already have here, but I just don't see it. Would I change my team to support a London team? - No - Do I see it personally as sustainable? - I don't really. I'm thinking of finances, travelling times and then a part of me thinks that the novelty to begin with would pull in crowds to games, but would it be consistent? - I'm not so sure, I think the hardcore fan base may pop along to games, but not like crowds in the States.

7. What other hobbies/sports do you enjoy apart from NFL?

I've been a massive motorsport fan since I was 4 years old, The 24 Hours of Le Mans is by far my favourite sporting event of the year. I enjoy cricket, baseball and darts. I write, fiction and sports journalism and a big book reader.

8. What's your favourite film?

I have so many, but I'm going to say Twister because that is mine and Mrs Commish's favourite film together.

9. What's your favourite music?

My favourite band of all-time is Fleetwood Mac, I also like Queen. I'm big into my Dance/House music scene ever since going to Ibiza back in the 90s. That genre of music takes up 90% of my Spotify playlist.

10. Who is your Super Bowl tip this year?

I'm rubbish at predictions. I'm going to say Buffalo.

That was the Quick 10 interview with The Commish - aka - me, talking to myself.
