BEWARE THE KRAKEN
Heading into 2021 the news from Kraken HQ had been quiet, culminating in the announcement yesterday that the GM was stepping down for work commitments. He wished the league well and commented how much he enjoyed the league but believed Airdrie Kraken would benefit from a person who could step in and hit the ground running this year.
Rich, the former GM of Havant Rebels in British Bulldog, submitted his interest for the position and was confirmed as the new GM of Airdrie Kraken. He had never visited Airdrie, we are not even sure if he has been beyond the English-Scottish border, but he has settled in straight away and the below trades confirm this.
First up was a deal with Hartlepool Heathens, who had been in trade action previously.
The Kraken sent their 8th round pick to the Heathens for Antonio Gibson and a 14th round draft pick. Kraken released Kerryon Johnson to make way for Gibson.
An hour later they were back in the trade arena with divisional rivals the Rochdale Rams. The Kraken sent their 17th round draft pick to the Rams for Justin Simmons and Leighton Vander Esch, plus a 23rd round draft pick.
The Hartlepool Heathens GM on the first deal had this to say to awaiting reporters.
"I'm quite happy with the deal. Gibson is great and is only going to get better, but Nick Chubb is my keeper, so it made no sense letting him go back into the draft pool and getting nothing in return. There may be more to come."
That last comment insinuated that the Heathens were not finished yet.
Over at the Rams, they had this to say.
"We thank Rams veterans Justin Simmons and Leighton Vander Esch for their services last year and hope they bring success to the Kraken."
The press gathered for Rich, the new GM of Airdrie Kraken, so many in fact that ESPN and the NFL Network had to listen to his press conference from the lobby.
"After the Raiders signing of Drake, I am very concerned about the lack of pass-game usage for Josh Jacobs. So, I felt I needed to acquire a true work-horse to build my franchise around. After discussions with several franchises, I identified Gibson as the right man for the job."
Rich moved on to comment about the trade one hour later.
"After addressing my number one need at running back, I turned my attention to defense, where I wanted to secure some new talent to freshen things up. I identified Vander Esch and Simmons as two players who would likely be cut, so I worked a deal before they were released to bring them aboard the mighty Kraken."
That appears to solidify the intentions of the new Kraken GM and how he sees the team moving forward, potentially not a team hoping to make the playoffs, but a team with one eye in the playoffs.
An interesting day of trades for Airdrie Kraken and the new GM has certainly spiced things up in the BFC in the last 24 hours.
