QUICK 10 WITH.....WESTON RENEGADES
Weston, or to give the place its full name Weston-super-Mare, is a seaside town in Somerset, south-west of Bristol.
Reports state the area has been inhabited since the iron age and its oldest structure is Worlebury Camp. The famous civil engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel resided in Weston whilst he constructed the Bristol and Exeter Railway.
RAF Weston-super-Mare opened in 1936 and was used a flying candidate selection and training facility and also the Polish Air Force staff college. It is now an active heliport and houses a helicopter museum.
In sporting terms, Weston-super Mare A.F.C. play in the Southern Premier League and they have two national level Rugby Union teams with Hornets and Weston. Somerset County Cricket Club played at Clarence Park close to the coast and is well known for its motocross.
In fact, The Commish and Mrs Commish attended the Brean Rally when he was covering motorsport which is a village parish between Weston and Burnham-on-Sea.
The Weston Renegades have relocated for 2021. The new GM took over Leicester Renegades last year and was unable to secure a suitable facility for the team to play and decided to take his franchise "home". They have the number 1 overall pick in the BFA draft for 2021, also known as "Weston are picking Nick Chubb".
This is Damien, the GM of Weston Renegades, and these are his Quick 10 Questions.
1. How did you get involved in the league?
I stumbled across the leagues Twitter when someone retweeted that the league had vacancies. I looked into the league and loved the idea of team Twitter pages. The league vibe seemed really fun. Had high expectations coming into the league off that and I haven't bee disappointed.
2. What team do you support and why?
J-E-T-S, J-E-T-S, J-E-T-S!!! - Why? - Obviously because I love pain, suffering and a lifetime of no sporting highlights. I went to a game with my family whilst on holiday in New York as a kid and was hooked. Sucked into the void ever since. On a subsequent visit I was lucky enough to meet Herm Edwards when he was HC. He promised me the good times were round the corner. Why you gotta lie to me, Herm?!
3. How did you get into the NFL?
From the visit to New York and seeing the game as a kid. The whole spectacle of it put some sort of spell on me.
4. Who is your favourite player and why?
Christ! You're asking a lot of a Jets fan!
All-time? - Darrelle Revis and Curtis Martin.
Current Jet? - Can't say.
Every time I get a jersey with my favourite player on, they get traded. The name on my current jersey may or may not rhyme with Pam Varnold.
Favourite non-Jet? - Huge DK Metcalf fan.
5. What is your fantasy football experience?
At it since 2000, in my final year of school when a Dolphins fan friend roped into a league with him and his family. I win leagues as often as the Jets win Super Bowls.
6. What are your views on a London franchise?
Would be great for London and the UK fans who want to see the visiting teams, but I can't see them gaining a loyal fan base. If you love the game, you've already got a team you live and die for. Still, hugely in favour though.
7. What other hobbies/sports do you enjoy apart from NFL?
NBA fanatic. It's my favourite sport. Real shame fantasy NBA stinks. Knicks fan, never miss a game. The franchise, thankfully, is showing huge signs of life this year.
8. What's your favourite film?
Here's an answer I bet you won't hear again in these interviews - The Wedding Singer. Adam Sandler as a sad sack singer who falls for a weirdo like Drew Barrymore? Inject that into my veins!
9. What's your favourite music?
I go from one extreme to the other here. Hip-hop is my first love, but if you were to hear my shower playlist you are equally likely to hear Ice Cube as you hear Take That and Elton John.
10. Who is your Super Bowl tip this year?
J-E-T-S, J-E-T-S, J-E......nope, can't do it.
Couldn't finish that without hating myself. I like the direction Buffalo and Cleveland are going in. Essentially though, I think it's Kansas. With a team that strong, it eliminates so many variables along the playoff path.
We want to thank Damien for taking the time out to answer these Quick 10 questions and wish him the best of luck in his first full season as GM in the BFA. Good luck with that number one pick.
