QUICK 10 WITH.....ESSEX WOLVERINES
Essex was invaded by the Romans in AD 43, who overthrew the then capital of the territory, Colchester. It evolved from the Kingdom of the East Saxons and saw three major battles during the Anglo-Saxon period, the Battles of Benfleet, Maldon and Assandun. It was then conquered by the Normans and was home to William the Conqueror for a while.
In sporting terms, Essex are successful and well established in county cricket, winning 8 county championships and producing some great England talent over the years, the county is home to Colchester United and Southend United in the football league plus an abundance of non-league teams. Other sports notable for the area are two ice hockey teams based in Romford and Chelmsford, greyhound racing and horse racing plus Team Essex Volleyball Club compete at the highest level in England Volleyball.
The sporting endeavours of the county reached a new level in 2020 as the Essex Wolverines not only won the top level BFFL East Division with an 11-2 record, but swept through the playoffs and ultimately won the BFFL Bowl. Essex lost only two games all season.
Quiet in the chats, but a destroyer in fantasy football for 2020 it was time to pop over to Essex and talk to the Wolverines GM.
This is Jamie, the GM of the Essex Wolverines and these are his Quick 10 Questions.
1. How did you get involved in the league?
I was keen to start playing and I saw a post on the NFL UK Reddit page, I messaged Simmo and the rest is history. I couldn't have asked for a better league to start my fantasy football journey with!
2. What team do you support and why?
I'm a Lions fan - When I first got into the NFL I was flicking through YouTube watching highlights and I stumbled across a video of Calvin Johnson, not really realising the quality of the rest of the team I blinding picked them.
I also follow the Michigan Wolverines relatively closely, the company I joined a few years back have a head quarters in Ann Arbor so I have a lot of work friends to talk football with!
3. How did you get into NFL?
I started playing when I got to University for the Coventry Jets in 2013, it was around then I really started to spend time watching games.
4. Who is your favourite player and why?
Has to be Megatron, he really got me into the sport. My current favourite player is Golladay, although I can't see this lasting through to next year.
5. What is your experience with fantasy football?
This was actually my first year playing fantasy football. I played in this league and a work league (which I did incredible poorly in)
6. What are your views on a potential London franchise?
All for it, I wouldn't change teams (as bad as they are). But the more opportunities to watch games the better.
7. What other hobbies/sports do you enjoy apart from NFL?
I'll watch any sports (apart from Cricket), but the two sports I follow closest would be Rugby and Golf
8. What's your favourite film?
I think this one has to be Gladiator by a long way!
9. What's your favourite music?
I'll listen to pretty much anything but bands I like most would be Biffy Clyro and Foo Fighters
10. Who is your Super Bowl tip this year?
I really think the Chiefs will be back for it this season.
We would like to thank Jamie for taking the time to answer the Quick 10 questions. First season, first title. Can he defend his British Championship in 2021? - Time will tell.
