QUICK 10 WITH.....SOUTH YORKSHIRE JAGUARS
South Yorkshire. It is the southern most county in the Yorkshire and Humber region and consists of four metropolitan boroughs, Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. The county lies on the east side of the Pennines with Sheffield its largest settlement. The county itself was not created until 1974.
There are prehistoric remains dating back to 8000 BC and rock art has been discovered in caves. The region itself was a frontier during the Roman period. The main industries in the area were steel and mining.
The towns of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham all boast Football League teams, but it is the two teams from Sheffield which have seen the most success over the years, United and Wednesday. Of course Yorkshire is famed for its cricket with Yorkshire C.C.C. producing many England legends over the years. The Sheffield Steelers are members of the Elite Ice Hockey League and have won nine regular season titles. Rugby League is prevalent in the area.
The South Yorkshire Jaguars are a re-brand from 2020, where they were known as the Fife Phoenix. They have relocated and changed their name but will continue to participate in the BFA North Division in 2021. Their record last season was a 2-11 and they have the second overall pick in the 2021 BFA Draft. It is safe to say that last year the new GM came in and had his eyes firmly set on 2021 and the rebuilding process began in 2020.
This is Lee, the GM of the South Yorkshire Jaguars, and these are his Quick 10 Questions.
1. How did you get involved in the league?
I was in a few listener leagues with Murf & Stocks at 5 Yard Rush and I mentioned more than once how much I was loving the IDP Mayhem League (made the bowl game in that one) so as the BFFL is IDP, when a GM position opened up in the league Murf put me in touch with our esteemed Commish, Simmo and I took over the 0-3 Fife Phoenix. Started well enough winning 2 of first 3 but then the downward spiral started and the people of Fife ran me out of town. I moved the franchise and became South Yorkshire Jaguars, named after a team I played for in the early 90's (they no longer exist) As it happens I did win one of the other listener Mayhem leagues!
2. What team do you support and why?
I'm a Seahawks fan now, but its a long journey getting here.
3. How did you get into NFL?
I've been a fan of the NFL since the early 80's and the first Super Bowl I remember seeing press coverage of was the Washington John Riggins 83 season and watched whatever coverage I could find after that. I was amazed at how agile (even in the old days) the big fellas were. The first Super Bowl I remember properly is the 85 Bears. For the first few years I didn't follow a particular team but there were a couple of other mates at school who did, a Broncos fan and a Washington fan. In 1989 they decided I needed to pick a team, and as the Houston Oilers were trying to do something different with the original Run & Shoot offense I decided Warren Moon & co were my team. I really didn't buy into a team moving from one city to another so refused to move my fandom to the Titans and just followed the league in general again. I spent a couple of years travelling and lost touch with the league during the mid 2000's but started to follow seriously again in 2008 when Marshawn Lynch was running hard in Buffalo and he quickly became a favourite - When he was traded to the Seahawks, I decided they would become my new team. I remembered the Seattle team fondly from the KC game with DT recording 7 sacks, he is one of my all time favourite players - that 89 draft was phenomenal! Also remember Tez winning DPOY on a losing team, what a player he was.
4. Who is your favourite player and why?
There are so many but if I am pushed for a single player all time it has to be Bazza, Barry Sanders (see comment above re: 89 draft) The touchdown run vs Colts where Rodney Peete hands off and signals touchdown with Bazza cutting back behind the O-line still at about the 25 yard line is my favourite play all time by a mile, check out the play on You Tube. Favourite player right now is probably Josh Allen, love the way he is playing the game.
5. What is your experience with fantasy football?
I've been playing fantasy football since about 2010, varying success but a few championships to go along with the numerous also-ran performances. Committed to way too many leagues last year during lockdown and will be cutting down to about a dozen this year! (depending on how many 5 Yard Rush run again!)
6. What are your views on a potential London franchise?
I don't fancy a London Franchise at all - really like that 3 or 4 games a year still makes the experience a little novel and that you get fans of all teams attending and I think this would dwindle with an 8 game home team schedule.
7. What other hobbies/sports do you enjoy apart from NFL?
Linked to the NFL, I'm a fan of College football and I've done a couple of road trips taking in both College and NFL. I'm a keen golfer so lockdown is really doing my head in! You can't not like the 6 Nations as a tournament, and I travelled to Sydney for a long weekend for the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final after getting tickets very late in the day. Scuba diving will always be my first love though.
8. What's your favourite film?
Fight Club - love that film.
9. What's your favourite music?
I have such a wide and varied musical taste - I enjoy everything from pop to Metallica, but I am an early 90's dance music guy at heart, so many good memories from nights out at that time.
10. Who is your Super Bowl tip this year?
We would like to thank Lee for taking the time to answer the Quick 10 Questions and hope the move from Fife to South Yorkshire wasn't too stressful.
